FAQ
How does it work?
Our Tamaani LTE modems connect to a tower in each of the communities that we service. The towers then connect to our servers and to the internet through a satellite connection. This changes slightly in communities with fiber: the fiber modem connects to the satellite through the fiber lines and then to the internet through the satellite.
How do I get Internet service?
To obtain Tamaani Internet service for your home or business, please contact the local agent of your community. View our agent list. Or stop at our head office in Kuujjuaq and sign up before going to the other communities
Will there be a registration or activation fee for the new service?
Anytime there is a new service added, or account opened, there is no sign up fee, or deposit required. If the equipment is damaged however the full price of the equipment will be charged to the customer, please see our Terms and Conditions.
Will it be as fast as “down south”?
At this time, the speed of Tamaani Internet cannot match that of internet providers “down south” for a live connection. Our service is delivered via satellite, which besides the fact that it is very expensive, also has a high latency. Latency is when the satellite dish in your community signals a satellite in outer space, which then transfers to Tamaani’s hub in Wier (QC) to gather the information from the website you’re trying to access so it can beam it back to your home again. That’s a long process that often brings what people call “latency”, which means you’ll have to wait a moment for the process to take place. To match the speeds of Internet providers “down south” for a live connection, we would need a physical cable of some kind run directly for our centers in Nunavik to a “southern” point.
Does the LTE or Fiber modem come with Wi-Fi?
Yes, both the LTE and Fiber units have a built in Wi-Fi router. With its built-in router, your Tamaani device provides you now much more mobility at home. Whatever your internet service plans, you can have freedom of movement while enjoying the Web.
Will I be able to connect my own router to the provided equipment?
Both the LTE and Fiber units have an integrated router and Wi-Fi access point, so there is no need to use additional hardware. You can connect your own router to this device should you choose to, however any extra wiring that is requested would be at an extra cost, please see the Terms and Conditions.
Can I use my LTE or Fiber unit in other Communities in Nunavik?
You can use your LTE modem in any Nunavik community where Tamaani Internet offers the LTE service. The Fiber Service is fixed point and cannot travel or move.
Can I use my LTE modem somewhere other than Nunavik?
Currently our LTE services only work in Nunavik.
Can we purchase our own LTE devices instead?
We can only service and support LTE equipment we have certified to run on our network. At the present time outside devices are not recommended nor supported.
What happens if I go over my monthly usage limit?
While you will not be charged additional costs if you go over your monthly usage limit, your modem speed will be reduced for the remainder of the month. Note: You can buy additional bandwidth per month. To order or get more information, please contact us.
How can I better manage my usage on the LTE plans and modem?
We’ve put together lots of useful tips on managing your usage.
Why don’t we get unlimited usage?
Unfortunately, unlimited usage is not available. Our network operates over a satellite based infrastructure, which is very expensive for a limited amount of capacity. As a result, we ensure network usage is properly managed to ensure all customers benefit from fair and equal access, and the highest quality of service.
Where can I see my usage?
This feature is available on the Web site. You should see the usage meter in the header and footer of the Web site. For any other usage questions, contact our customer service.
Can I see my statement online?
We are currently working towards being able to offer the ability to see your statement online through our website. For now, please contact customer service for any billing questions.
